St. Nicholas Catholic Elementary School will welcome Albert Bedward writer, photographer, videographer, instructor, and YCDSB IT Specialist on February 20th as part of its Black History Month celebrations. Bedward will share an interactive presentation about family members who helped realize his grandfather’s dream, Brown’s Cleaners & Tailors, Ottawa’s first Jamaican Caribbean store, which opened in the 1950s. To Caribbean immigrants and the community at large it was a place of employment, a community centre, and a portal for the ‘West Indian Domestic Scheme.’ Students will follow Albert as he traces his family’s contributions to Canada, from their service during WWII to social, artistic, business and educational contributions. Bedward’s message that “when you believe, all is possible, particularly the impossible,” will inspire students and staff alike.
Parents are welcome to join us at 12:30 on Wednesday, February 20th.
