Weekly Update: November 7-11, 2022

Dear St. Nicholas CES Parents and Guardians,

The week of November 6-12 is Treaties Recognition Week.  During this week we reflect on the importance of treaties (binding agreements, or promises), and increase awareness of the treaty relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities in Ontario. We recognize Treaty Week as part of an ongoing journey of healing and reconciliation walked together by Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.  As we continue this journey together, we gratefully acknowledge that our York Catholic schools rest on traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee and Huron-Wendat.

We celebrate the contributions of Indigenous Peoples to the development of Canada. Indigenous peoples were the first stewards of the land, waters and resources.

Let us prayer the Treaty Week Prayer:

Let us remember that Indigenous peoples gently walked this land,

Let us remember that Treaties are promises.

Let us respect those promises.

Let us remember all of the promises in our lives.

Let us remember to be kind to everyone.

Let us remember to treat others the way we want to be treated.

Let us remember to love our neighbours.

Amen.

Halloween

St. Nicholas CES enjoyed a fun Halloween day, with divisional dance time and costume competition, as well as pumpkin decorating!

We thank the Catholic School Council for sponsoring the pumpkins for this class activity.

Synchronous Learning

As was indicated in the email sent by the York Catholic District School Board, unless there is an agreement reached between CUPE and the Government of Ontario, starting on Monday, November 7, 2022, and for the balance of any further job action by CUPE, York Catholic will move to synchronous virtual learning.

If you requested a device for your child(ren), you will soon receive a communication with information regarding the pick up of (a) school device(s) for loan during the period of synchronous learning.

St. Nicholas CES teachers and administration will do our best to communicate with, and respond to, parents and guardians in a timely manner.  As the school is closed, please communicate with your child’s teachers via their virtual learning environment (e.g., Google classroom).  For any non-classroom related questions, please contact Mrs. Quadrini at connie.quadrini@ycdsb.ca.

We pray that students will soon be able to return to the classroom.

Parent-Teacher Interviews

Parent teacher interviews will take place on November 17th in the evening and November 18th in the morning.  More information will follow this week regarding the format and process for scheduling interviews with teachers.

Remembrance Day

This Friday, November 11th is Remembrance Day.  Our school has scheduled a service at 10:30am.  If synchronous virtual learning continues for the entire week, classes will participate in the service via Google Meet.

Closing Reflection

November 11th, Remembrance Day, is a day to say “thank you” and to remember all those who have served and are currently serving in the Canadian Armed Forces.  During the first half of the 20th century, 1.5 million Canadians were called upon to defend peace and freedom.   We are truly grateful to those who worked hard and even sacrificed their lives to make Canada a safe, peaceful and free country.

God of love and justice,

We remember all men and women who died in defense of our country and its freedom.

Help us to honour their sacrifice through our prayers and actions for peace in our world.

Send your Spirit to help us to let go of misunderstandings, hatred and prejudice so that we may grow together as one family.

Guide our steps in the way of peace.

We ask this prayer through Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace.

Amen.

St. Nicholas, pray for us.

Wishing you a wonderful week!

Sincerely,

C. Quadrini, Principal
