Weekly Update: April 3-7, 2023

Welcome to the month of April!

Today is Palm Sunday, the final Sunday of Lent. This day begins the sacred time of Holy Week, when we prayerfully remember the events of Jesus’ Passion and death. It is a holy time in which we pray reverently and reflect on our faith and on our love for Christ.

Loving God,

We praise you in a special way today as we celebrate Palm Sunday.
Be with us as we begin our journey through Holy Week,
that we may more closely align our lives with yours,
knowing suffering and death,
yet remaining hopeful in the life you promise.
We ask this through Christ, our Lord.

Amen.

Lenten Food Drive

We thank families for their generous donations of food items for our Lenten Food Drive in support of the Newmarket & Georgina Food Pantry. These items will be distributed to those in need this Easter season. May God bless you for your acts of kindness and almsgiving.

Stations of the Cross

We thank our Grade 6 students, under the direction of Ms. McArthur, for leading us through the Stations of the Cross, presented in tableau format with narration. We are grateful for this opportunity to commemorate Jesus’ last day on earth as a man, and to prepare our hearts for the coming of Easter.

York Region Dental Screening

A reminder that York Regional Public Health dental screening will be conducted at St. Nicholas CES on Tuesday, April 11th, 2023 by a Registered Dental Hygienist for students in JK, SK, Grades 2 and 8, possibly Grades 4, 7, and others as requested by parents/guardians.

Dental screening consists of a quick look in the mouth using a separate, single-use mirror for each child. School screening does not take the place of a regular dental check-up. Your child may be re-screened at a later date to confirm that treatment has been initiated.

Dental screenings will only be performed on children who are not showing any signs of illness (i.e. cough, runny nose).

Please see the attached letters for more information, including if you do not wish your child to participate in the screening.

Kaleidoscope in the Schools (KITS)

We look forward to hosting KITS at St. Nicholas CES on Thursday, April 13th, 2023. Students in FDK to Grade 4 will have the opportunity to participate in this unique school-based program created by the Aurora Cultural Centre. The Bon Débarras performance will be led by a folk band featuring guitar, banjo, violin and harmonica and will take students on a whirlwind musical journey with feet stomping, hand clapping, leg slapping, and full-on singing!  Grade 4 students will also engage in a post-show workshop that includes a hands-on interactive activity based on the performance.

We thank the Aurora Cultural Centre Team for offering to bring this special event to St. Nicholas CES!

For more information, please see the flyer below.

Closing Prayer

As the Lenten comes to an end, let us close with our Lenten prayer.

in ways that bring us closer to you.
Help us to persevere in staying with you
on the journey through Lent to Easter.
Amen.

St. Nicholas, pray for us.

Wishing you a blessed Holy week.

Sincerely,
C. Quadrini, Principal
